In February I signed our family up for a program called Giving Families . I wanted a way that I could show our kids to give back and show kindness regularly. But, sometimes I forget to show them or share with them how we give back. I liked that Giving Families mailed you a challenge to do each month. Plus, these challenges are geared for the whole family.
The month of March was our first official month with Giving Families (Yes, MARCH and I’m just now getting to finishing the post) I was so excited to receive our challenge for the month in the mail. When it arrived I was even more presently surprised to find that it supported a cause near and dear to my heart; The Ronald McDonald House.
The Ronald McDonald House provides a place to stay for parents and loved ones of children who are receiving care at a major hospital that they do not live near. The RMH will allow you to stay for free if you truly can’t afford it but even if you can they only charge $10 a night to stay. During your stay they provide nightly meals, an open kitchen to eat from as well as unconditional love and support through activities, free passes and so much more.
We have stayed at the Ronald McDonald house on many occasions during my son’s Spina Bifida adventure and have always felt welcome. It is like a second home. The opportunity to give back to those who may be going through similar circumstances that we have faced was just awesome.
March’s challenge was to create coloring books/ activity books to bring to your local Ronald McDonald House. There were four coloring pages donated by Rachel Macy Stafford author of Only Love Today . These pages were inspirational, hopeful and most of all encouraging. Of course, I was delighted to include them in our families activity books. You could just print these pages and bring them in. But we created mini books to take to the Ronald McDonald house. Our family made two adult versions and two child versions.
We included the pages from Rachel Macy Stafford but also added in some puzzles, mazes, children’s coloring pages, and we created our own cover page. Sitting down to create these books was fun for our whole family. It was therapeutic to take the time to sit down relax and just color as a family. Definitely, something I need to do more often with my kids.
Since my children are young they don’t entirely understand the concept of why we were making these books. However, I think it’s important to introduce them to the idea of giving back, helping others and just being kind even at a young age. Which is why I love being apart of Giving Families. Each month we receive our new challenge in the mail of how we can give back in our community. These mailers make it easy for me since I don’t have to come up with the challenges on my own. PLUS, they are already geared to incorporate the whole family, not just the adults. I encourage you to check out Giving Families to get your whole family involved in Giving Back.
We also included crayons and markers with our books because sometimes all you need to keep a kid or yourself entertained is some crayons. Plus, what fun is an activity book if you don’t have anything to color it with.
Another way we give back to the Ronald McDonald house is by collecting Pop Tops. We have an ongoing collection at our house of tabs that we pull from soda cans, beer cans, etc. And we ask our friends to collect them too. It’s easy and simple. All you have to do is pull the tab off of the drink can. Put it aside We collect ours in a red solo cup. Real fancy, I know;) Then, we bag up the ones we have collected and those our friends and family have collected . We drop of the tabs to the Ronald McDonald House the next time we are in the area. Which, for us is quite frequently as Jaxon still visits the hospital several times a year for checkups and testing.
This simple act can results in thousands of dollars for the Ronald McDonald House each year. You can learn more about the program here. Do you want to help us collect pop tops for the RMH? Just set up a station in your home or place of work to drop your tabs in. If you’re local (Wilmington, NC) let me know when you’ve collected your tabs and I can pick them up to donate during my next trip to Chapel Hill. Not local to Wilmington you can take them to any local American Legion Post in North Carolina. Not in North Carolina? I encourage you to check out the Ronald McDonald page to see how you can donate. This has got to be the EASIEST way to give back that I have ever seen. Here’s are donation for next week. We’ve been collecting for a while and had many friends contribute as well.
I am so excited to visit the Ronald McDonald house next week to drop of my donations. It feels good to be able to give back even if it’s just in these small ways. The Ronald McDonald house has a huge list of ways you can give back including gifts from their Amazon Wish List, Volunteering or cash donations.
Remember, Sharing is caring! Pin it to save it for later.
